This is the name generator for Neverwinter the MMO: the free-to-play Dungeons & Dragons game developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Arc Games, the one with Protector's Enclave, paragon paths and a Zen Market. It is NOT for Neverwinter Nights, the older RPG that shares its name and most of its search results.
If Nights is what you came for, the D&D name generator will treat a tabletop-flavoured hero properly and I will not be offended. Much. Everyone else, sit down. The bloody dice has fifteen races to get through and is not doing it twice.
Nobody can take your name, which is either wonderful or insulting
On most MMOs you fight for a name. Neverwinter will not let you. Character names are unique only within your own account, so nobody on the shard can take yours, and you cannot take anybody else's.
Lovely, until you meet three other tieflings in the Enclave wearing the name you thought you had invented. The question stops being "is it free?" and becomes "is it any GOOD?" That is a much harder question, and it is the only one this page exists to answer.
The one name that genuinely stays yours is the @handle. It is account-level, set once, and has no self-service change. Permanent, then, rather than precious. Choose it with more care than you chose your first dungeon group.
What the name field actually accepts
The field takes a space, so the first name and the surname both go in, and the claim button hands you both together. The title is roleplay. It never goes near the field.
No character limit is published anywhere first-party, and I have looked, repeatedly, in corners a dice should never have to visit. So this page quotes no number. Where the publisher says nothing, I say nothing, and the rest of the internet could stand to try it.
Drow and gith names keep their apostrophes, because they should. Whether the field accepts one is not published either, so try it at character creation before you fall in love with it.
The filter reads inside your words
Players report that Neverwinter's profanity filter matches letters INSIDE words rather than whole words. A perfectly innocent name bounces because something rude is hiding in its middle, and one player had the word "second" refused as a companion name.
It gets better. Players report the game's own random-name button tripping the game's own filter, which is the sort of scandal I would normally sell to a tabloid for a great deal of money. If a name from here bounces, look for the word hiding in it, and do not take it personally.
Fifteen races, and three of them are elves
This is Neverwinter's own roster, not the tabletop one: nine free races and six from the Zen Market. Sun, Moon and Wood Elf are separate picks, alongside Drow, the Menzoberranzan Renegade, Dragonborn, Metallic Ancestry Dragonborn, Gith and Aasimar.
Race carries the sound of the name. Drow get doubled consonants and apostrophes, dwarves get hard stops and anvils, halflings get homely compound surnames, and the Renegade inherits every drow syllable with a few of its own on top. I know far too much about this. I have made my peace with it.
Class, paragon path, and a god with opinions
Nine classes and eighteen paragon paths, named as they are in game today: Blademaster, Songblade, Arbiter, Dreadnought, Hellbringer, Thaumaturge and the rest. Pick one and the titles change their entire personality. A Songblade Bard comes out Sings While Stabbing, Always Off-Key.
Then the deity, all twelve from the creation screen. In game the choice is purely cosmetic. Here it is the HEAVIEST dial on the page, because it is the most personal thing you pick, and Kelemvor's faithful come out Great at Funerals, Oddly Cheerful.
That is 482 titles in all, every one tone-tagged, running from Survivor of Barovia at the dignified end down to Leeches Every Random Queue at the other, with Holder of a Laminated Rename Token somewhere in the middle, looking extremely pleased with itself.
Still shipping, and the dice noticed
Neverwinter is older and quieter than it once was, and pretending otherwise would insult you. It is also still shipping: Biting Cold arrived in May 2026 with the Reghed Edge and the Jotunskar dungeon, and another module is promised before the year is out.
So the titles go all the way to the frozen edge of the map: Frostborn of the Reghed Edge, Who Faced the Stormbound Reaver. A game that keeps adding places deserves a generator that keeps up, and I would like that acknowledged.
And to whoever keeps posting that it is dead: Tells New Players the Game Is Dead is a rude-tone title on this page, and it was written with you very specifically in mind.
Behind the Full Send corner, the Enclave smells
Off by default, off again when you leave, and behind it sit 57 entries that exist nowhere else on this site: lockboxes, Enchanted Keys, rothé herds and what they leave in the valley, the sweat of Chult and the cold of the Reghed Edge.
None of it is a swear and none of it goes further than bums and wind. The field takes a space, so a crude surname could go into the game in principle. The filter will catch most of it, which is the filter's job and not mine.
The rest of the D&D family
Neverwinter shares its gods, its races and half its monsters with two siblings, and each keeps to its own patch. The D&D name generator is for the table: setting-neutral, current rules, and a great deal of dice-rolling I heartily approve of.
The Baldur's Gate 3 name generator takes the southern Sword Coast, which is why not one Baldur's Gate street name appears on this page. And if the alt is going somewhere with twenty years of naming habit behind it, try the World of Warcraft generator.
This page keeps the Enclave: fifteen races, eighteen paragon paths, twelve gods, and a name nobody can take from you.
