More options (the name bends harder the deeper you go)

Black Desert has two name boxes, and the second one is not optional, because the game has already filled it in for you. Badly. Since March 2021 every new Adventurer is handed the word Adventurer and four random characters — Pearl Abyss's own worked example is Adventurer8aw2 — and everybody in Velia sees you as Rookie Adventurer until you do something about it.

So this page produces both halves at once: the character name, and the account-wide Family Name that every alt you ever roll will inherit. Nine homelands, six callings, thirty-two classes and eleven lifeskills steer it, and a title arrives on top for the roleplay of it. I did all of that, and nobody has mentioned it.

The one the game chose for you was never going to stick

The Family Name Change window opens the first time you press Enter, and Pearl Abyss are clear that it opens ONCE per account. Get it right and you are reconnected and living under the new name in about twenty seconds. Get it wrong and you have spent the only free go you had.

Family Names are unique, which is the wall this page exists to get you over. The publisher documents the rejection screen themselves — there is already an Adventurer using that one, and would you like to keep trying. Arrive with ten you would be content with rather than one you have already fallen in love with.

The titles know exactly what happened to you: Formerly Rookie Adventurer, Filed Under Letters and Numbers, the Adventurer With a Number In It, and at the far end Nameless No Longer. Eight other generators rank for this game and not one of them knows the assignment happens at all.

Two boxes, and only one of them is permanent

The character name is per-character, and Black Desert players reroll constantly. Every class is gender-locked, so wanting the same archetype the other way round means a whole new character, and every season hands you another one on top of that.

The Family Name is the permanent, visible one. It sits above every alt on the account, it is the one other people learn, and it is the only part of this worth being genuinely precious about — which is why it gets its own half of every roll rather than an afterthought.

The title is not a game field at all. Black Desert has an in-game title system and those are earned rather than typed, so anything handed to you under that heading here is pure roleplay. That is precisely why the rude corner of the die costs you nothing.

Nine homelands, and they do not share one bag of syllables

Balenos and Serendia run rustic, Calpheon runs aristocratic, Mediah sits on the Silk Road, Valencia is desert sultanate, Kamasylvia is all flowing vowels, Drieghan is highland gutturals, O'dyllita is obsidian and apostrophes, and Land of the Morning Light is Korean-inspired. Edania, the newest, makes nine.

Homeland is the one control here you cannot switch off, and it carries thirty-eight tagged items apiece. Vio'ria Sablegloom and Sahim Dunewell did not come out of the same bag wearing different hats, and I learned all nine registers separately. I am told most tools manage with one.

O'dyllita names keep their apostrophe, because that is how the language builds them. Whether the creation box accepts one is not something Pearl Abyss have ever published, so you get the form the lore actually uses, and you get told which part of that is unverified.

Thirty-two classes, six callings, and eleven ways to avoid combat entirely

Thirty-two classes is far too many for one dropdown, so they sit under six callings — Vanguard, Blade, Shadow, Marksman, Caster and Spirit & Fist. Pick a calling and the class list narrows to the ones that actually belong to it, rather than offering a Blade the Wizard's bench.

Lifeskill carries the heaviest weight of the four axes, deliberately, because the AFK economy here is an identity rather than a footnote. A career fisherman is a real and specific person and he will tell you about it at length, so Emperor of AFK Fishing is in there for him.

Enhancement gets its own corner, obviously. Blew the Whole Failstack on a Boot, the Two Hundred Failstack Funeral, the Pity Blacksmith's Best Customer. I did not write those for my own entertainment. I wrote them because they are going to happen to you.

Nobody has published a character limit, so I am not going to invent one

Every source for the famous three-to-sixteen-character rule turns out to be a rival name generator quoting another rival name generator. Pearl Abyss have published nothing on it, so this page counts you down against NOTHING, and says so rather than quietly pretending to know.

There is a length budget steering the rolls — twenty-eight characters, measured across roughly ten thousand unbudgeted draws rather than picked out of the air — but that one is mine, and it is a tuning number rather than a rule anybody enforces. The distinction is small, tedious and completely load-bearing.

Go and check it before you type it

Pearl Abyss run an Adventurer search on their own website that takes a Region, a Family Name or a Character Name and tells you what is already out there. A paying player asked publicly, in August, whether such a thing existed. It does, it has for years, and nobody had told them.

So roll ten, keep the three you can live with, and go and look before you spend the one free change you are ever given. That is the entire advice, and it is better than anything else you are likely to be offered today.

Name ideas, if you would rather just read some

Two dozen the die has already rolled, sitting still so you can scan them. Press the button for your own — these are only here because somebody always asks.

The other generators

Same die, different worlds. Each one has its own axes, its own titles and its own opinions about what a name is allowed to be.
